Mom-Baby Microbiome Health

A healthy microbiome—the tens of millions of microorganisms that live in our intestines, our respiratory tract and on our skin—can set the stage for extraordinary health. However, any disturbances in the microbiome can have adverse health effects, including future ones.

More specifically, researchers have begun to highlight the importance of a healthy microbiome for both expectant Moms and for their babies, citing that any disruptions to microbiota early in life could influence the risk of disease occurring later in life. For instance, a recent study reported that an increase in gut bacteria richness at three months of age was associated with a reduced risk for food allergies when the child reaches one year of age.

These findings are among others pointing towards similar discoveries and were so significant that the researchers reviewed a collection of studies in a special issue of Birth Defects Research Part C: Embryo Today titled The Microbiome and Childhood Diseases. One of the scientists, Dr. Meropol, stated, “Disturbed microbiota could potentially contribute to a wide range of childhood diseases including allergies, asthma, obesity and autism-like neurodevelopmental conditions.”

Meropol also references several recent studies that indicate that other factors may help a child’s microbiome development, including breastfeeding (which helps infants grow friendly gut bacteria), vaginal birth and skin-to-skin contact directly after birth.

And while it is a popular belief that the development of microbiota begins at birth and that the womb is a sterile environment, recent studies challenge that idea, saying that gut microbiota development begins before birth—while the baby is still in the womb.

As an example, in a review called “Microbial Programming of Health and Disease Starts During Fetal Life,” research points towards the offspring of mothers with allergies who have more Enterobacteriaceae bacteria in their earliest stools, which may increase their risk of later-life respiratory difficulties.

Dr. Meropol points out, “This means that not only do we have to consider the microbiome of the child but also that of the mother, and the irony is that some of our modern medical practices, through their effects on these early microbiota, could have unintended consequences, interfering with normal development of children’s immune, metabolic and neurologic systems.”

Some of those “modern medical practices” Meropol refers to includes Cesarean section, antibiotic use, immunizations and formula feeding—all of which can negatively impact the early microbiome.

Dr. Meropol believes that these initial findings have only “scratched the surface” of this important topic. She emphasizes the need to “better understand these complex changes in infant developmental and molecular physiology. Protecting and repairing the developmental processes of the healthy infant microbiome is the modern medical frontier.”

That said, you can bet there will be more research on this, so stay tuned.

Sauerkraut Test Divulges Shocking Probiotic Count

www.flickr.com

It was recently reported that sauerkraut topped the charts of probiotics, surpassing that of over-the -counter probiotics purchased.

Dr. Mercola sent his sauerkraut off to a lab and reported the findings of probiotics saying, “We had it analyzed. We found in a 4-6 ounce serving of the fermented vegetables there were literally ten trillion bacteria.” That means 2 ounces of home fermented sauerkraut had more probiotics than a bottle of 100 count probiotic capsules. Translated this means one 16 ounce of sauerkraut is equal to 8 bottles of probiotics.

He says there’s two ways a lab can analyze the microbial presence in the sauerkraut,”One is to measure the quantity of bacteria growing and then the more expensive process is to speciate the different types of bacteria. We’re in the process of doing that now.”

In The Gluten Summit, 2013, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, told Dr. Tom O’Bryan, ““With every mouthful of sauerkraut you’re consuming billions of beneficial microbes which will be killing the pathogens in your gut driving them out and replenishing the beneficial flora in your digestive tract.”

The probiotic count of store-bought, shelf stable sauerkraut does not compare to home-brewed sauerkraut. Click here to learn how to make your own. Click here to learn how to make sauerkraut at home and here to learn how to make kraut juice, a more gentle on the stomach probiotic for those with leaky gut. People who do have unbalanced gut flora with an overpopulation of bad gut bacteria pathogens experience die-off symptoms such as diarrhea, rash, cold-like symptoms, flu-like symptoms, etc. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride recommends starting with one teaspoon and looking for die-off symptoms then gradually increasing the amount daily or weekly depending on what your body can handle. To read more click here. To see another test on mice with sauerkraut click here.

Die off symptoms are accompanied with inflammation. Healing and inflammation do not go hand in hand. It is important to keep inflammation down so healing can take place therefore it is important to keep the amount of die off down to just below a noticeable state.

Cabbage is high in anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins A and C. Cabbage also reduces lipids in the bloodstream. When cabbage is fermented into sauerkraut the fermentation process opens up the cell walls accessing a higher ratio of vitamins. It has been said that sauerkraut has 200 times more vitamin C than the head of cabbage before fermentation.

The African Journal of Science and Research (AJSR) said, “Healthy colons of humans contain some beneficial bacteria which feed on digestive wastes, thereby producing lactic acid. Without these beneficial bacteria, the digestive tracts become a thriving zone for DSC04298pathogenic bacteria and yeasts, resulting in candidiasis. However, it is suggested that the consumption of lacto-fermented sauerkraut could help re-establish lactobacilli.”

Bacteria in your body outnumber your cells by about 10 to 1.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, author GAPS (affiliate link) says 90% of our body is made up of microbes.

In 1807 French psychiatrist Phillipe Pinel said, “The primary seat of insanity generally is in the region of the DSC04295stomach and intestines.” Pinel is known as the father of modern psychiatry and came to this quote after working with mental patients for many years.

Sauerkraut is high in tyrosine, an amino acid that affects many aspects of the body including blood pressure regulation and dopamine. To learn how to make your own sauerkraut in three easy steps click here.

The Medicinal Uses of Mustard Seed

mustard.jpg

Medicinal uses

– Mustard seeds and its oil has traditionally been used to relieve muscle pain, rheumatism and arthritic pain.

– In India, mustard oil is applied over scalp and is believed to stimulate hair growth.

– Its ground seeds act as a laxative, stimulant to gastric mucosa and increase intestinal secretion.

Health benefits of mustard seeds

  • Generally perceived as health benefiting spice, mustard seeds are indeed very rich in phyto-nutrients, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants.
  • Being one of the chief oil seeds, mustards are indeed very high in calories; 100 g of seeds provide 508 calories. Nonetheless, the seeds are made of quality proteins, essential oils, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.
  • The seeds are high in essential oils as well as plant sterols. Some of important sterols include such as brassicasterol, campesterol, sitosterol, avenasterol and stigmasterol. Some of glucosinolate and fatty acids in the seeds include sinigrin, myrosin, erucic, eicosenoic, oleic, and palmitic acids.
  • Mustard seeds are an excellent source of essential B-complex vitamins such as folates, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine (vitaminB-6), pantothenic acid. These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish. These B-complex groups of vitamins help in enzyme synthesis, nervous system function and regulating body metabolism.
  • 100 g of mustards provide 4.733 mg of niacin (vitamin B-3). Niacin is a part of nicotinamide co-enzymes that help lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  • Mustard seeds contain flavonoid and carotenoid antioxidants such as carotenes, zea-xanthin, and lutein. In addition, the seeds compose a small amount of vitamin anti-oxidants such as vitamin A, C, and vitamin K.
  • The seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, gamma tocopherol; contain about 19.82 mg per 100 g (about 132% of RDA). Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant, required for maintaining the integrity of cell membrane of mucus membranes and skin by protecting it from harmful oxygen-free radicals.
  • Mustards are rich source of health benefiting minerals. Calcium, manganese, copper, iron, selenium and zinc are some of the minerals especially concentrated in these seeds. Calcium helps build bone and teeth. Manganese is employed by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Iron is required for the red blood cell formation and cellular metabolism.

Mustard is also said to stimulate appetite by increasing the flow of saliva and digestive juices. A bit of mustard powder added to a footbath helps kill athlete’s foot fungus. Don’t eat too many mustard seeds or more than a teaspoon of mustard powder; the former has a strong laxative effect, while the latter can induce vomiting.

Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Laxatives

W. H. AUDEN (1907-73)

The Americans are violently oral… Even the American passion for laxatives can be explained as an oral manifestation. They want to get rid of any unpleasantness taken in through the mouth.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty might have been sponsored by a laxative company.

For a year, beginning in 1884, the Statue of Liberty sat in a courtyard belonging to Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi the French sculptor who designed it. He’d finished building it, but the pedestal wasn’t ready in the US – $100,000 was needed to complete it. La Monde began a campaign to raise the money which began to pour in.

Laxative makers Castoria offered to give $25,000 provided the name of their laxative would be displayed at the top of the statue for a year – the offer was politely declined.

Sugar-Free Sweets

Lots of sugar-free sweets contain lycasin, a glucose syrup almost as sweet as sugar but with only half the calories. Lycasin is a powerful laxative if taken in large quantities. Unfortunately, our systems can’t fully digest it and it ferments in our colon, causing bloating, wind, loose stools and stomach rumbles. A study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2002 concluded that the ingestion by an adult of 40g of lycasin-sweetened confectionery was enough to cause these symptoms.

Taken in moderation, sweets containing lycasin are perfectly safe, but people don’t take them in moderation. Sugar-free Haribo gummy bears are sold in 3kg bags – that’s 57 times the amount needed to cause bloating, loose stools etc.

The Amazon page selling them clearly warns: ‘may cause stomach discomfort and/or a laxative effect’. The same page has over 250 comments from those who ignored the warning. Here are some of the milder comments:

‘Stomach discomfort turns out to be a massive understatement’;
‘gastrointestinal Armageddon’;
‘calamitous flatulence’;
‘trumpets calling the demons back to Hell’;
‘guttural pronouncement so loud it threatened to drown out my own voice’;
and ‘flammable liquid. NAPALM’, are some of the milder comments.

Rhubarb

The word ‘rhubarb’ may be a contraction of rheum-barbarum, from the Greek rheuma, ‘that which flows’. This word was used for rivers, lava, or bodily discharges, hence Linnaeus’ botanical name Rheum, since rhubarb was used from ancient times as a laxative. This fact almost led to a diplomatic crisis during the Opium Wars (1839-42).

Until The Rhubarb Triangle started in the 1870s, most rhubarb came from China. In 1839, the imperial Chinese commissioner Lin Zexu wrote a letter to Queen Victoria warning that, unless the British stopped supplying opium to China, he would cut off rhubarb supplies to Britain, killing everyone through mass constipation. It seems that the Queen never had the letter translated, and so remained unaware of the danger. In the event, the British sent an army from India to force the Chinese to accept British opium imports.

Until the 1920’s, mental patients were sedated by being fed ‘croton oil’ – the world’s most powerful known laxative.

In bingo, ‘Doctors orders’ is 9 because in the Second World War, No 9 was a laxative handed out by medics.

Coconut is a laxative.

The overuse of laxatives can cause constipation.

Wherever you are… do as the Russians do!

ITAR-TASS 66: ZHELEZNOVODSK, RUSSIA. JUNE 19. The monument to a bulb syringe appears on the grounds of the Mashuk Aqua Term sanatorium in Inozemtsevo settlement. Unveiled in June 2008 to worldwide attention, the Russian spa Mashuk Aqua-Therm is home to the only monument commemorating enemas in the world. The 770-pound bronze statue stands nearly five feet tall and was created by a local regional artist named Svetlana Avakova.

Drawing inspiration from a Botticelli painting entitled “Venus and Mars,” which shows cherubs stealing the God of War’s weapon, the artist fashioned a large bronze bulb held aloft by three cherubs as the motif for the spa.

The choice to commemorate such an unusual medical procedure stems from the region in which the spa lies. Known for the many mineral springs in the area, spas such as Mashuk have long been a destination for Russians seeking rest and cures for various ailments in the healing waters.
